Like clockwork?
Just as I was cooking supper tonight the phone rang. My good friend Doug Stevens was on the line. He's off for a few days and asked me if I could take his turn to wind the clock in the church. Now this is no small clock but the one in the tower. It was made in 1893. So is a beautiful piece of work. It has a huge pendulum and mechanism, and 3 large weights which need winching up into the church tower every night.
Here is the mechanism itself. It is a large thing about 5ft long I would guess and very heavy.
Here you can just about see the date stamp on the machine.
Look carefully here and you can see the weights winched right up to the top of the tower.
The whole thing is superb. Its a real honour to be winding it for the next few days. I'll see what more I can find out about it. It strikes every 1/4 hour and makes a wonderful sound.
