Eco Hummer

Not sure where the original of this came from - but this is just so funny it had to be posted.

Note the Kyoto tick!

Tim used this in his talk on Friday last week on Carbon Footprints.

Later on...

I just got sent this - a truly eco hummer... Sorry don't know the source... apologies to anyone concerned.

I did a bit of digging and came across this.

http://www.veggiegas.ca/history.htm which I suspect is where this comes from.

I'm posting here the text of the site

"In defence of the friendly Hummer… (A personal postscript!)

'I drive a Hummer for environmental reasons.' I recognize that this sounds nuts to most people. (At least it would to the myriad people who give me the finger as I drive by!) I bought a Hummer H1 for a number of reasons – one of which I admit is because I think they are unspeakably cool – but two of the main reasons were that they are built to last and they run on diesel.

I have become increasingly aggravated by products of all industries that are cynically designed to be replaced after a short period of time. Hummers (the original, A.M. General-made kind that the US military uses) are built to withstand 12 years of hard work and abuse that only soldiers could put them through. Since I won’t be using mine anywhere near that hard I can expect it to last many life-times longer than the average disposable car or truck will.

It’s mind boggling to think of the amount of energy and raw materials that have to be scraped from the earth to manufacture a car or truck. Then think about that same energy expenditure being repeated every 5 years or so when the average car dies its undignified death.

I have always maintained that buying a Hummer (H1) is a responsible environmental choice. A Hummer running on biodiesel produces thousands of pounds less greenhouse gases each year than the average Hybrid – never mind the fact that that Hummer’s fuel is renewable.

So while it is true that some Hummers are used to defend the world’s fossil fuel supply, others are actively cleaning up the environment. Beware inappropriate stereotypes! (And maybe even reserve the finger for your neighbours in their gasoline powered Subarus!)

OK - so thats his view of the world. Its a shame that BioFuel just doesn't add up. It is probably the worlds worst idea. Instead of using the precious resource of land for food now we're using it to provide fuel for Hummers! Whats worse is apparently virgin rain forest is being cleared to plant biofuel crops...

Thats my view.

Something else I'd like to add to this - the newest car we own is 8 years old. It is still going strong and likely to last at least another 8 years. The oldest I have is 50 years old and it does 50 miles per gallon of petroleum.

My daily driver is a 15 years old VW Golf and it does over 40 mpg. I wish it was a diesel and may one day slip an engine into it from a newer diesel model of the same car.

I support the use of cars that last - but a Hummer being justified I find is pushing it a bit too far!

I'm being lazy but I don't suppose you have a link to anything that confirms that bio fuels are greener than normal petrolchemicals and not, perhaps, just bad in other ways.

Be interested to hear your views on why, with petrol/diesel being so expensive, more petrol pumps/cars been converted to sell bio fuels?

Seems to be a win/win scenario - cheaper, more powerful fuel that's greener too?

aahhh .. just read the last bit of your post re: BioFuels not being a great idea.

Still .. do you have any links to stuff which explains biofuels in more detail?
