Trouble in Karachi

This time last year I was getting ready to go to Karachi in Pakistan. I nearly went there a month ago too.

Sadly opposition leader Benazir Bhuto was murdered by savages yesterday in Pakistan. My colleague Farhan was out and about in Karachi at the time it happened and encountered chaos and violence on the streets on his way home.

I had been hoping to see him in the next few weeks out there and to travel with him to see some of the lovely areas around Sindh province. Now I think it unlikely I'll be able to...

I got the following from him today:

Hello Simon...!! Yes, this is true the political conditions and law & order is worst at the moment here. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. She has passed but now her supporters are reacting wildely on streets. Here we have voilent protest acts on streets, poor people are still the victim of all their voilent acts. Crazy supporters are ruining the public and government properties. Litting fires to the cars, buses, hospitals, police stations, trains and any property of private or govt. use which is coming infront of them. The coming election is also under stake, no one knows what is going on here. We are all frustrated and hopeless for the future of this country. All sacrificies of our ancesters and forefathers for the movement of Pakistan are now look like to be wasted in these painful conditions. We ourselves kill our brothers and sisters, there is a severe lack of unity and peace in our rows. God help us to understand each other and think for the prosperity and future of this country. Many thanks for being with us in this difficult time.

Note: I edited the above slightly to remove a comment which I thought could be overly controversial. I hate doing that, but don't want any problems with censorship, here or elsewhere. I know that this blog is already censored in some countries...

Please pray that the situation will improve for all in Pakistan.
