A home made Bazooka (Spud Gun)

After being begged for months by Huw to make a spud gun we decided to have a go yesterday. The results were astonishing, and I have to admit guilt. I broke a roof tile with an apple on a house in Bishopstone. Sorry.

Here's how we did it...

We went to Wickes building supplies and purchased a length of drain pipe, a reducer pipe, an end stop and a soil pipe with a screw on inspection cap, some glue and a small gas lighter. We used some suede shoe protector as the propellant. Here's the bits...

Assembly was easy. Once all parts were glued togther and some small screws added to ensure it doesn't fall apart even if the glue fails we drilled a small hole to insert the end of the gas lighter and stapped it to the 'barrell'.

Here's a short video of the first firing.

Later we went to Paul's house and fired an apple vertically into the sky. It must have gone 200 to 300 feet high before coming down on his neighbours roof and smashing a tile. That was very embarrassing. A bit later on we went down to Doug's house and the boys fired the thing in the field, shooting tennis balls about 100 yards! Amazing how powerful this thing is.

OK .. I can _now_ see why having sons rather (or as well as) daughters is a good thing :)

Mind you .. I havent forgotten the door/hammer incident.

I've not had so much fun in ages as we did with that. I'm bringing it into work tomorrow...
