Cold Turkey - no more M$
I took the plunge today and zapped my laptop. I've had it about 18 months and the old M$ Windoze XP was starting to creak at the seams and slow to the point it was taking 5 mins to start and shutdown. Crazy.
So I've spent the morning backing up all my files that I need and decided to install Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04. It took less than 40 mins to be back up and working again on a new fast zippy operating system.
Sadly I have a couple of dependencies on M$ and have had to install a copy of VMWare Workstation and build up a virtual Windoze machine inside the Ubuntu build just to be able to run the few things that require M$ still.
So far the experience is a joy. We'll see what happens over the next few weeks as I go cold turkey on M$. The things I need still in Windoze are in the process of being converted to work cross-platform so it won't be long and I won't need M$ at all.

Why ubuntu?
igor
Hello Igor,
I decided upon Ubuntu because of the huge range of drivers available for it, and the massive installed base. I've used it several times in the past and been very impressed. One of my colleagues has gone for a different flavour of linux.
Ubuntu picked up everything on my Samsung X60+ with no problem at all. Its really lovely to use too.
Sadly I still have to have a VM running windows, for a particular application which requires Internet Explorer, but that will soon run cross browser so I'll be able to ditch that too. (Maybe should keep it for testing...)
