A day at the races. Standlake Arena - Banger Racing
Doug, Scott, Huw and I took off for our final holiday event to the Heavy Metal Classic Banger racing today at Standlake Arena.
A fixture always on the first weekend of the new year, I've been going for the past few years to watch lovely old classics and junky old cars fight it out on the track. There are effectively 2 classes. Under 1800cc and over 1800cc. The unders and overs. Unders are typically Capris, Escorts, Nissan Bluebirds, Astras and classics like Austin Cambridges. The overs are typically Volvo 245s, Jaguars, Rovers, Granadas etc and a splattering of American cars which seem to bend very easily despite their size. Its mostly Volvo 240 series estates that seem to do the best.
There was also a Rover P4 there in the overs class today. Just like my lovely GAS 760. It lasted a few races then got badly sandwiched and was towed off. Blue car in front on the picture above.
For me the best races are the full contact all comers and demolition races. The latter being the most demanding. The last car running is the winner and head on collisions seemed to be the order of the day to finish opponents off today. One nutter didn't want to wait till the demolition race and started going for one car in particular in the overs all comers race, even after the red flags had gone up.
A cold and fun day out. Back to work with a bump tomorrow.
