Sanliurfa - the morning after the night before

Had a lovely meal of mixed kebabs last night. Followed by some kind of bread/dough thing in a sweet sugary sauce covered in pistachios. Delicious. Thanks Tolga.

I'm staying in the 4* Hotel Harram which is bang in the middle of Sanliurfa. The town itself is a mix of ancient and modern construction. Right next to my Hotel is a brand new building which is still being built. I was really surprised to see wooden scaffolding in use - it's around 7 floors high and the scaffolding looks pretty unsafe to my untrained eye.

When I got to my room it was very noisy with music from outside. In the street opposite was an open air concert and also some magicians wearing the traditional Fez. A big crowd had gathered and were listening to Turkish music. Interesting to watch from my room.

I've just returned from a half hour or so wander through the streets of the town. Its hot here today - probably around 28C I would guess. Pretty dusty too. But most of all the noise of car horns is what stands out to me. The drivers seem to lean on the horn buttons most of the time they are moving. They have no regard for pedestrians!

There are lots of 3 wheel motorbikes carrying big bags of nuts, people pushing trolleys about with piles of fruit on.
