Thieves

I find this hard to believe. Yesterday I wrote that I feel like a lucky man. I still do, but my view of the people around me has shifted somewhat.

As I mentioned yesterday, my wife bakes bread and we do a deal with the veg man for some discount on his organic veggies in exchange for some of the bread. Works very well for both parties. Today as usual we left the bread on the door step so that when the veg man comes he can take it and leave the veg.

By chance I am working at home today, and I heard a noise at the door, assuming it to be the veg man I ran down stairs and discovered it was only the post man. So I picked up the post and went to the kitchen to make a drink. On my way back past the door I thought I'd check if I had in fact actually missed the fella already. I couldn't believe my eyes when I opened the door.

The bread box was on it's side, some of the bread was on the floor, and one of the loaves was missing, along with the top cover sheet. You can guess what I thought concerning the recent visitor to my front door. So I got in the car and drove round the village eventually found him just round the corner. I asked him what he'd seen on the door step and he told me he'd seen the bread box on it's side and thought it a bit odd. So I don't believe it was him, it must have happened in a roughly 30 minute period between me putting the bread there and hearing the postman.

Where we live is a small village, 400 residents at harvest time. Mid morning there are very few people around, a few local elderly folk and maybe the odd work man, but in general very few people passing. So who the heck would nick a loaf of freshly made bread from my doorstep? My door is not right on the road, you have to go up the drive to get to it. So I have reached the conclusion, that there is someone very dishonest who lives near me. And I don't like that feeling.
