Exposed - the sorry state of our food chain
Yesterday, Sudan 1 was found in over 350 common foods on sale in the UK. This resulted in one of the biggest food product recalls ever.
This banned substance found it's way in to food through "reputable companies". For once a mistake like this made the news headlines. How many others pass under the radar and we are never told?
I work for a company specialising in supply chain traceability - many of the affected companies have spoken to us in the past and dismissed what we do, preferring instead to carry on running round on their hampster wheels.
In my opinion the one way to ensure that such "mistakes" are less likely is to make everyone do full supply chain traceability in the food chain. This should be truly open, such that you and I as consumers can really see what is going into our food. We are now so detached from what goes on, that none of us really know anymore.
Why on earth does chilli powder need a red dye in it anyway - surely chilli powder is red enough from the red chillis used? Maybe it's not red chillis after all that are used to make it...
